A Comparative Study on Urinary Tract Infection and Two Drainage Systems in Patients with Indwelling Catheter.

Abstract
This Study was conducted at Chonnam National University Hospital on 55 inpatients from June to October 1982. Each Patient was screened beforehand for sterile urine in clean catch specimen.
In 27 patients the Foley¢¥s catheter drained into an open bottle, while in 28 patients the catheter emptied into a sealed bottle. Clean catch specimen was then obtained through the catheter and also directly from the bottle at 24 and 72 hour intervals after catheterization.
The following results were obtained:
1. Clean catch specimen through Foley¢¥s catheter.
a) after 24 hours of catheterization, no bacteriuria occurred in both drainage systems.
b) after 72 hours, the bacteriuria occurred in 50% with the open system and 15% with the closed system.
2. Clean catch specimen from drainage bottle.
a) In open system, bacteriuria occurred in 25.9% after 24 hours and 80% after 72 hours.
b) In closed system, no bacteriuria was seen at both time intervals.
3. Effect of systemic antibiotics.
a) During the first 24 hours, no bacteriuria was seen in both systems.
b) After 72 hours, bacteriuria was observed in 50% of open system regardless of antibiotics therapy.
c) In the closed system after 72 hours, bacteriuria occurred in 14.3% which was not significantly different from 16.7¡Æ, in those not on antibiotics therapy.
